How to Get the Best Photographs of Your Infant

Saint John Photographer Miranda O’Leary.

Timing can make a huge difference when getting photographs of infants. All stages of a child growing are special but when it comes to photographing an infant there are peek times a photographer prefers over others to ensure you get the best and most memorable portraits for your money.

Over the past two months I had the privilege of having a set of amazing twins living in my home. It provides a great timeline for me to show my clients the difference of how the age of an infant means a lot when photographing. Waiting another 2 weeks to a month makes a huge difference with head control, expressions, responsiveness, and much more.

My preferred age for capturing infant photographs is before they are 10 days old. They are still in their sleepy stage and are easily posed. More patience and booking time is required as they reach closer to a month old.

This example took patience and about 30 minutes of soothing to get little Jackson to sleep and posed for this photograph. As you can see I’m pretty happy he is finally sleeping after all the hard work.

Age 3 months

This example shows how timing in the day means a lot also. Schedule your session around nap times. Lots of patience and soothing can eventually settle a baby at any age.

The next 3 examples show lack of head control and expression at 3 1/2 months. Then 3-4 weeks later I attempted the same shot and it took no time at all.

I love photographing infants between 5-6 months of age. You can really begin to get creative and capture amazing photographs in no time at all as the infant is more stable with posing and expressions.

Feel free to call any time and ask about what ages work best for photographing your infant. I want to ensure that my clients always get their money’s worth and will have a wonderful experience along with many photographs to cherish.

Give me a call and we’ll book your little beauties at a time that works best for them and for you here in our Saint John studio so we can get the very best infant photos possible.  You’ll want to be able to cherish them forever!

Hey Miranda! I was hoping to get Mackenzie’s photos taken soon. She is 4 months old now so I was hoping between 5 and 6 months when she can hold her head up and sit by herself. Is this a good time to get photos taken??? Thanks a bunch. Talk to you soon!

      Hi Stefanie,
Yes 5-6 months can be so much fun. I really enjoy having them in at that time as they are usually full of giggles and very cooperative. I can set up different props fast and get a great selection of Portraits for you. I have lots of great little girl props and we would have a field day with her :) It’s probably best to set up and book soon to be sure I have a spot open around that time. I’m excited to meet your little gem:)
      Thanks ,

Yes they are adorable! I loved having them live her for the few months. It was very hard to see them leave. But I’m getting my fix with all the little babies that come to visit me in the studio:)
